Chinese Gardens Write Up

My walk got off to an awkward start as I tried to obtain a student ticket using only Chinese. I took out my Chinese Student ID card and she didn't understand until somehow she was able to recognize the characters for "Da xue," which means "university." I obtained my student ticket and was on my way with my bubble tea (quick note: Bubble teas in China cost $0.40 not $3.50!!!). After entering the gardens I stuck to my first rule of going in a counterclockwise direction. The entry doors to the garden reminded me of traditional Chinese doors, especially a pair I took a photograph of in the Forbidden City in Beijing. The garden itself had a lot of general/typical Chinese culture cluttered into a very small space. The garden itself certainly resemble Hangzhou/Suzhou, which are both nature/water towns. The bridges and the majority of the architecture were spot on, and I started to recall specific areas/photos that the garden resembled. I started down a plant filled path, and the path instantly reminded me of the time I went on a hike through some tea farms. Although the scent was not the same, it helped me to recall the wonderful smell of fresh green tea leaves. The garden only had one full moon doorway, but it reminded me a lot of my favorite city, Yangshuo. There was also a small scale mountainous structure that resembled Mt. Huangshan. Every time I stopped for my two minute reflection I was able to point out a lot of things that reminded me of China, e.g. the roof tiling, and only a few things that did were not Chinese, e.g. plant life that one would never see in China...I could only assume because of the climate of Portland is why they used these plants in the garden. My favorite part of my walk was when I saw an empty pair of chairs with a table in between. I instantly remembered a pair of old men in the small town on Tunxi, who were taking in a mid-afternoon game of Chinese checkers. One of my favorite photos, the happiness this photo evoked was revitalized. One another one of my breaks I took a few pictures of a bridge that reminded me of a small garden we had at my university in Shanghai. A beautiful, small, tranquil place to study or talk. I wish I could have walked over the bridge in the gardens and be transported back to Fudan University, but unfortunately it did not happen....maybe next time! I feel like the Chinese gardens were an accurate portrayal of a lot of structures/landscapes you would in China, but not in one city. Overall, my experience in the Chinese Gardens was a positive one and my "China-withdrawls" were taken care of.

Walking Assignment

Every day, I think about my time in China. From the scent of breakfast from my favorite food stall to the amazing landscapes/architectural designs I saw on a daily basis, I miss it all (Especially the food!). Therefore, I decided to walk through the Chinese Gardens of Portland, to see if this quarter of a block in downtown Portland would be able to stimulate any of my senses or memories from my time abroad.

The rules:
1. I can only speak Chinese
2. Every 10 minutes, I must take a 2 minute break and see where/how (sight/smell/sound/ect.) my surroundings remind me of China.
3. I have to walk in a counterclockwise direction.
4. I can only eat/drink Chinese food/beverages
5. I must identify 5 different landmarks/cities the Chinese Gardens resemble.

3. Write up

Rules for Walking: 1. Pick a city to walk in that you know well 2. Bring a camera to take pictures of what you find along the way 3. You can go alone or with a friend 4. Pick any spot in the city where you want to start walking 5. Make sure the walk is an hour long (put on a timer or check your watch) 6. AA: Overheard at First Thursday

For this walk I decided to take my first ever tour of the Pearl's art gallery scene. Some friends and I went to First Thurday and milled about with the other patrons of the night. But we were on a mission.

I wanted to pay attention to how people were reacting to the art. I took pictures, recorded some (mostly unsuccessful video, and wrote down everything anyone said that was striking.

Rules:
Walk wherever you want for an hour
Take pictures to represent each letter of the alphabet
The more creative, the better

When I first started out and I was snapping pictures left and right I had a feeling that this was going to be pretty easy, that is until I worked my way to the bottom of the alphabet and the search started to get a little harder. The most frusterating were J,K,Q, and Z so those I feel were the ones where I was least creative. I didn't chose a specific route at all I just started at my apartment and just started walking which was really nice, it kept my mind off of the destination and more on the different pictures I was trying to capture.

I just moved into my new apartment over the weekend so the area is pretty new to me so it was pretty interesting winding around all of the streets, and one of the plus sides I found some new places to eat and some sweet parks. I wanted to make my walk to be sort of a game for the walker so I went for the sort of 'I Spy' feel

Walk to Fairy Falls by August Hess

For my walk, some friends and I went for a hike to Fairy Falls in the Columbia River Gorge. My rules were to react to the surroundings when inspired using performance art, tarot cards, and poetry. I created a small movie (shown here in 4 parts) of our walk.

AND I found a new love- making short films!! This is my first try at it and it took forever but was a blast!

A Neighborhood Journey through Mailboxes

It occurred to me as my family is preparing to move into a new home that I've never really taken the time to explore my neighborhood in the last 9 months. Of course, I've seen what I drive by every day to enter/exit my neighborhood, but I've never gone beyond our house. So I did, making sure to take no road I'd ever been down before. Rather than take pictures of my neighborhood and the sidewalks (which you could just view on Google Street View if you really wanted to), I decided to take pictures of the different mailboxes I passed along the way. Oddly enough, this sorry-excuse-for-a-rule actually turned out to accurately document the different types of homes I passed along my route!

From Summer Session

RULES:

Take only streets with which you are unfamiliar as often as possible
Photograph an object that each house has which may, in some way, reflect the types of houses and neighborhood in which you're walking

So I began my journey in what I've been told is "Yuppy-ville" filled with nothing but the nicest cars and huge, brand new townhomes inhabited by 20- and 30-somethings who wear snazzy clothes. (No judgment here :] I only moved to PDX to get away from that!) Unfortunately, this part of the neighborhood shares mass-mailboxes to make things easier on the mailperson; this doesn't, however, help my project! Everything is very cookie-cutter-esque, the architecture all very stiff and angular; the landscaping is exquisitely perfect (anything is compared to the 'landscaping' in Kansas City).

As I moved north, I began making my way into the houses which originally made up the neighborhood; houses from the 60s and 70s. I pass a few people taking walks with their pets or husbands/wives, and begin to notice how different the architecture is here: houses are actually unique, some of them with great breezeways with huge windows for creepy art students to peer into while passing by. The trees in this area are much older and thicker, the shade very protective and comforting; the ground between the sidewalk and the street is covered in ivy. One house has a small, handmade, two-dimensional horse cut out of wood in the front yard; another house has a stolen STOP sign on its fence ... The mailboxes in this area differ greatly between some of the nicer homes (as evident by their perfectly-laid brick mailboxes) and the middle-class family homes, which have 'pleasant' and creative mailboxes -- one resembles a spaceship with its synthetic, white, sharp edges; one sits atop wooden poles coming out of the ground, bound by rope, as if they'd just been taken from the Swiss Family Robinson movie.

Moving on to the east and southeast ends of my route, the houses move slightly lower on the income scale, but no where near trashy. The road is paved but there are no curbs. The landscaping in the yards here is clearly less attended to, but not running wild. The cars are no longer BMWs but Fords. The mailboxes are stereotypical, not creative, and they sit mostly atop slender poles, sometimes leaning over, sometimes surrounded by garbage cans, sometimes kept company by bright orange construction cones. The monotony is broken up by a rogue mailbox covered in painted flames to match the hotrod in the driveway that I've seen drive past my house so many times. Beyond this mailbox are sets of mailboxes, which I assume are huddled together to cut down the stops for the mailperson -- somehow, this almost creates a sense of community and comaradery amongst those who must live in those homes nearby. Or maybe I'm just overanalyzing mailboxes ...

Headed back west past Merritt Orchard Park is nothing but a family townhome complex even more cookie-cutter-esque than the first one I passed, these all being the exact same shade of brown. Alas, no individual mailboxes here either.

In retrospect, I regret not having explored my neighborhood more before having to move. The cookie-cutter townhomes and surburbanites remind me a lot of my hometown, which is comforting, despite how ready I was to leave. The older homes and lush green growth in the area and Merritt Orchard Park are prime examples of what drew me to the Northwest in the first place. The bitter-sweet realization I had is that I almost felt at home in this place. And now I must start anew!

Pilgrimage Walk

My walk was inspired by some folks who asked for directions to a church that was supposedly a couple blocks from where I live. I realized that I had no idea where any churches were even ones that I walk by everyday somehow are just filtered out, i don't even notice them. So i decided to make a pilgrimage to a few churches in my neighborhood.

The rules were:
-Don't be a jerk
-wear sunday clothes
-sit and think a bit at each one
-don't interrupt a service

So i woke up late this sunday and waited until 11:30 so that service would be finished. I took a shower and wore a skirt (my version of sunday clothes)

First was Parish of St. Mark:

I went into the little garden area and sat, it was quite nice. Mass just let out and I was trapped there while everyone said hi to the priests. It was exclusively old people, and everyone knew eachother. It was very scary.

Secondly, I went to First Immanuel Lutheran Church:

This one was also scary, it was really small and this guy said "you're just visiting, huh? that's nice..." and looked at me funny and I left.

Thirdly, I went to the closest one to my apartment, Trinity Episcopal Cathedral:

This one is very beautiful inside and out and they gave me a whole welcome folder and were very friendly.

The last church I made it to was First Presbyterian Church:

This one is huge and elaborate. A guy said I wasn't allowed to go in and take pictures. I asked if I could just go in and not take pictures, just sit. He said no, that I had to go to the front desk. I went to the front desk and they said it was cool if I took pictures.

Now I know where a few churches are in my neighborhood.

Mental Landscape: An Art Walk with Liz Crisman

Directions and Items for Mental Landscape Walk

10 Ground stakes (golf tee's work great)
Stopwatch or Timer
3 different colors of Yarn (make sure you can tell the colors apart)
Blade to cut yarn
Camera to document process
Music to listen to...

Total Time: One hour

Take your items + place in a travel bag
10 Mins: Scout out a large flat area to create your landscape (a park is best)
10 Mins: Take your first four ground stakes and find a starting point. Walk straight 30 paces,turn right walk 30 paces, etc until you have made a box. This is representing your brain.
Surround the square with yarn to make an outline
10 Mins: Place remaining ground stakes INSIDE your square, this is an organic exerise, where ever you want to place them.
30 Mins x taking 10 mins with each color of your yarn

Wrap one color of the yarn around the stakes inside your grid
You can wrap + connect to your outlined points if you want
Let your mind make a natural pattern

7. Once the 30 mins. is up, step outside and document your mental landscape

My buddy Andrew came along and filmed the walk with me. (See film above) All in all it was a really neat project. I enjoyed looking at the end result and doing some research on the patterns I made. Each string to me during this walk was defenintly tied to certain emotions I was feeling.

For my Walk, I chose my backyard as the subject matter. I walked my backyard in a grid like fashion, taking a photograph at every step. During the walk I spaced out a lot. I would not liken this to any kind of walking meditation trance state, just boredom. The light, however, was very nice. During my walk, I discovered cigarette butts from a party (Vogues from Taiwan....thanks Stephanie. Well, she was pretty wasted when she got to the party, so I can excuse the littering. At least they were all in one place.) I also learned that cats like to shit in the corners of the yard, there are blackberries coming up vis subterranean root system from the ally, and a weird white powder mold near the empty via raccoons chicken house. I had hoped by picking an utterly banal Walk, I might discover something interesting, but I didn't. My three forms of recording my walk entail a movie I have made with all of the 400 something photographs I took, a box of artifacts I retrieved, and this written statement.

When Katy first told us about the Walking assignment I automatically knew where I wanted to go. I have an elementary school close to my house and often I take walks there with people. Usually when I walk with friends and family, we have deep conversations. I knew right away I wanted to walk there because I never walk there by myself. It would be a change and something new even though I've taken the same walk over a dozen times.

This walk really symbolizes getting personal, thinking deeply about how you feel and whats going on in your life to me. Its a time period where you get to know yourself and let your thoughts take over you. When do we ever have time for ourselves? I knew it was crucial that I took this walk. It was almost a date with myself.

Rules for my Walk:
1. Don't step on any cracks.
2. Only go out when the sun is out.
3. Wave at every person that drives by.
4. Say Hello to every person that walks by. Try to start a conversation.
5. Write my thoughts down at every intersection.

Documentations for this walk:
1. A map of my route with little icons indicating waves, hellos and cracks.
2. Pictures of intersections, interesting things, cracks and anything else.
3. Journal of thoughts and observations during the walk.

PRE WALK
I had already sketched out my map on a large piece of paper so I had a mental picture of what I was going to work with when I was done with my walk. I waited all weekend for the sun to come out but it never did! I was freaking out because I knew I had to take the walk and without the sun I couldn't! So Sunday rolled around and it was already 4:30 p.m and I thought to myself, I have to break the rule or I would never end up going on the walk. Great start huh? Broke a rule before I even started the walk.

MY WALK
I will now illustrate my walk through pictures and my thoughts as they came.

So it was 5:04 P.M when I left my house with a bag, journal, pencil, snacks and camera.

& it begins. My starting point. Up trevino st. My neighbor was cutting his grass, a girl was riding her bike, a man was walking his dog, and two men were talking. I waved at two people and both smiled back at me. It was a bit chilly with a breeze in the air so I was thankful that I was wearing a sweatshirt. The lawn mower was really loud but I could still hear the birds chirping. It smelt like freshly cut grass. The man walking his dog said hello to me too :)

Trevino & 137th. I waved at five people and only one waved back, the rest just smiled. Someone just cut there grass here too, I can smell it and see the remains on the floor. A very low plane flew by. Someone is sitting in their white car, their door is open and one of their leg is hanging out. I can't hear the lawn mower anymore.

Freshly Cut Grass! MMmmmmm..

Beautiful sunflowers I had to take pictures of on my way down 137th. They made me so happy. It reminded me of my days back in early highschool when I use to walk back home from the bus stop and always see these. Something about sunflowers, they always brighten up your day!

137th & Hogan. A boy probably in highschool is skateboarding down the street. I waved, he looked at me like I was a freak. I waved at four more people, one waved back. There are lots of white floaties in the air. Is there a name for them? THE SUN IS OUT! 5 minutes later...Its really hot, maybe I shouldn't have worn a sweatshirt after all. There are two kids playing and one of them is biking. I waved at them and they turned their backs to me. Why is my neighborhood so unfriendly?

Yay findley elementary. It's really surprising no one was at the playground. It was Only one car at the parking lot! The first time I didn't see that many people there. It's getting hotter and the wind is getting stronger. I hear leaves rustling and kids talking. There is an older couple walking down the path I'm going to go down.

POST WALK
Apart from my unfriendly neighborhood, this walk actually made me really happy. This is why I named is "My Happy Walk". I think everyone should take out an hour in their day and walk somewhere by themselves everyday. I thought about lots of things like how my sophomore at OSU will be next year, where my relationship with my boyfriend is going, how I feel about my best friends at the moment, what I should work on to be a better person, my strict parents, turning 19th next week and much more. It truly accomplished it's goal as being a stress free and personal walk.

Walk rules

-Find 4 places which represent earth, fire, water and air.
(Rose garden grass, Cannon beach) the sun and air will appear them at the same time.
-Try not to walk in an urban setting. Try to walk in a park or forest or another source of nature.
-Try to feel great nature as walking company.

Instructions

1. Have someone take picture of me while I am posing walking. (50 pictures)
2. Develop them and cut the person shape out.
3. Take pictures of natures that shows grass, sun set, water fall or beach and clouds or sky.
( 50 pictures)
4. Develop them and paste walking person shape on each of nature pictures in the middle. (One walking person per picture)
5. Make sure the sequence animates walking.
6. Take pictures of the pictures you created.
7. Slide show and film it with background music.
8. Collect nature objects wherever you go.

Artists Who Walk.....Snapshot of a Stranger

The inspiration for this walk came from several themes I have been thinking about for some time. First, I have always been drawn toward conversations among strangers. I am always curious to discover what people are willing to share or not about themselves. It is interesting that in our computer culture, people can find themselves very easily engaged in on line conversations with people they do not know, conversations they might be reluctant to have with someone face to face. I have been surprised by the candor of some discussions/comments I have read, attributing this to the safety of anonymity. I am also keenly aware that some discussions on line are also disingenuous…that persons can create alter egos on line, and represent themselves as whomever they like. It seems that the cover of our computer screen can allow us the safety to be completely open, but also unknown, or completely dishonest, and safe from being called out.

In person, however, the meeting of two strangers sets up a different dynamic. No longer anonymous, we have a bit more at stake. Often there is a palpable discomfort. The reasons for this are many, and I am not necessarily concerned with reasons, but rather with the outcome of such unease. What do we choose to share, what do we hold back? Are we as genuine as we can be, and how long does that take to happen? Is it a matter of trust, or safety, insecurity, ego, or even chemistry between two people?

I am wanting to explore the idea of what people share about themselves when they are not permitted to talk about what they “do for a living.”(see rule #3 below) The topic of work is an easy fall back as a conversation starter. It can be a source of pride, or shame, and can then set the tone for the rest of the conversation. Work is often seen as identity..." I am what I do." I am interested in learning who people are aside from their professions.

Rules of the Walk:

Take an hour long walk with someone you do not know. By this I mean, someone with whom you have never had a conversation and/or met face to face. Ideally you would set up the walk through another person.
Have a conversation during the walk, this is not a silent meditation, although that could be interesting as well.
You may not talk/ask about your jobs, what you do for a living, how you make money, etc. Trying to be very clear about that!
The path of the walk is to be decided together as you walk.
Go over the rules of the walk before you begin.

I made a conscious decision to not have any prepared questions along the way. I wanted any discussion to be spontaneous, and any awkward spaces to be just that. I was eager to see where each walk took us...the physical landscape as well as the interpersonal one.

I headed to Milwaukie to the home of a friend to walk with Henry, the father of my friend. Henry is in town for a month visiting. I arrived at my friend's home, and within a matter of about thirty seconds, I was headed out the door with "my stranger." I explained very briefly the rules of the walk, and Henry was a little concerned about NOT talking about his work. "That will limit us some," he said. But in fact in didn't.

We walked for over an hour in fact, and talked the whole way. We spoke about our names first, and our preferences and dislikes concerning our nicknames. We then talked about families...our own and the nature and often dysfunctions of them. We ran into a number of dogs, giving them all our attention. This of course led to talk of pets in general. We then got into a long discussions of bees, and at one point Henry bent down and allowed a bee to crawl up on his finger. We walked for quite sometime with that bee, and then just as unexpectedly as it had joined us, it flew away.

I was amazed at the ease of our conversation. We had an immediate rapport and I credit Henry with being so open to the experience, with little or no expectation. The time passed quickly and before we knew it, we were back to home..no longer strangers it seemed. The experience was delightful!

WALK WITH KATSU

My second walk began as my first one had, with little fanfare and out the door. Katsu is visiting from Japan with hopes of moving to Portland. He apologized time and again for his English, which was completely unnecessary as his English was flawless. And my Japanese is non existent.

Katsu had just finished a 43 day, 800 mile pilgrimage on a island off of Japan. He walked everyday...up to 30 miles, but averaging about 20 miles per day, with the intent of visiting over 80 Buddhist temples along the way. He called himself a "funeral Buddhist"...one who only seeks out a monk when someone has died. But the devotion of an 800 mile trek seemed to counter his perception of his faith. He saw the pilgrimage as a way for him to return to a simpler life, one he had been living until his father had become sick and then passed away.Katsu had returned home to care for his father and to take care of the family business. It was during this time Katsu said he became a "spending person." A person he did not want to be. He has slowed his pace since his trip and is free right now of work of any kind...open to seeing what happens.

We also spoke of Katsu's wife. She is Chinese from Hong Kong and she is not with him on this trip. They met at the university in Los Angeles, and married shortly after. I was amazed to learn that they are only able to communicate to each other through English, as neither knows the other's first language. While Katsu's English is very good, he says he misses the subtleties of the language, as does his wife. Katsu said that English for them is the "shock absorber of their emotions." I am still pondering this...

The walk with Katsu too flew by. He laughed at me once saying that if I had wanted to walk with a stranger in Japan, people there would think I was crazy. I laughed and told him how in our culture we warn our children to "not talk to strangers," but how often we actually do in fact. I dropped off Katsu at the home of his host. We hugged briefly and I felt I had made a new friend.

NOTES REGARDING BOTH WALKS

In both walks, I found that the physical path we took was decided through a primarily unspoken communication. It seemed we walked with no direction or destination in mind, and only on a few occasions did we need to stop and pay attention to where we were. Once we came upon a dead end, another a very busy street. Often I did not notice the scenery at all, but then there were moments when our surroundings directly influenced our conversation. The walk and the hour we spent was what we had in common...we had committed to that time and space together and what unfolded seemed a shared investment.

Tips For Finding Strangers

1.Ask your friends to help you connect with someone you do not know. I put out feelers to a number of friends, and the most ideal situation set me up with someone who I did not have even an menial conversation with. In one instance, I did speak with my “stranger” via cell phone, to set up the time and date. I felt afterwards, that this may have compromised the walk. In the end, I was unable to walk with this person, so I am not sure how this would have panned out.

2. Some suggested craigslist….I was skeptical

3. Wear a billboard sign, advertising for a “walk with an artist who walks.” Walk with someone who's up for the walk.

4. “Cold call” approach someone you don’t know and ask them....might be weird

As a matter of safety, if the person is not the friend of a friend,walk in a public space with lots of people around. You don’t need to go for a hike in a forest, pick an urban setting. If you feel unsafe…ABORT the walk.

5. I have thought seriously about organizing an "walk with a stranger" event. Ideally people would be called to gather at starting point and each person would be paired with another randomly, again someone they didn't know at all. Each pair would be given an hour to walk, after which everyone would return to the starting place. A discussion/ opportunity to share would follow.

While I was searching, I came across an interesting website about Sculpture artist James Hampton.

It seems that :

The signs from his writing were seen continually within his artworks.

The assumption is that his writing was created in an altered state of consiousness.

"James Lee inspired the idea that led to the Reality Club (and subsequently to Edge), and is responsible for the motto of the club. He believed that to arrive at an axiology of societal knowledge it was pure folly to go to a Widener Library and read 6 million volumes of books. (In this regard he kept only four books at a time in a box in his minimally furnished room, replacing books as he read them.) I have been looking around online for unique sculptures, some for their interest, some for what they are made from.

The first three are made from chewed bubblegum.

This one is made from wood & aluminum foil

I just liked the monumental scale of this bronze sculpture.

This one is from Jeff Koonz - a unique artist who only comes up with the ideas - has artists actually make them. He loves to make sculptures of popular items like balloon animals. This huge one is made of epoxy resin.

The site was in Italian, so I couldn't read it, but it looks like this sculpture is covered in natural materials.

OK - This weekend was quite interesting. I spent 12+ hours Friday & Saturday cutting out the pieces and gluing them. After working 6 hours on Sunday the whole thing fell apart - literally.

So, I had to think, rethink and come up with a new idea.

"Origami was invented in China around 100AD. The word origami simply means "paper folding". Japan was in the habit of adopting interesting parts of the Chinese culture, and took on the craft of origami around 600AD. It is Japanese origami which has become a world famous cultural emblem.

"As in many societies, paper was a luxury item, created by hand and used only for important, long lasting purposes. When origami was first brought to Japan, only the rich practiced the art of folding paper into shapes. The shape creation was a way of adding special meaning to what the paper held on it or in it.

"For love notes, origami was doubly special. First, the origami shape itself could represent a message. The selection of color and shape help conveyed the true emotions of the writer. Second, origami is an intricate art. If the love note was intercepted, it would be unlikely that the reader could perfectly refold the shape. So the origami love note was very secure - it could not be read by the wrong person without the recipient knowing it.

"For thousands of years the Japanese culture has treasured the crane as a symbol of honor and loyalty. The crane is a majestic bird which mates for life and is extremely loyal to its partner. The bird is strong, graceful and beautiful. Because of the great importance of the crane, the Japanese people feel that a person who folds 1,000 cranes will be granted his or her greatest wish."

The first images are from The Pagoda Chinese restaurant on NE Broadway and 39th. The Pagoda was a fixture in the Hollywood District of Portland for more than 70 years. It closed its doors December 31st, 2008. I chose this spot for several reason...first, the orange and red tiles provide a lovely backdrop to the white cranes. Second, I was saddened that a place with such a long tradition would succumb to tagging and general disrespect. Where is the loyalty and honor in that?

These next shots were taken at the corner of NE Oregon and NE &th. The statue is by Muriel Castanis and is titled Ideals. Seemed appropriate for birds who represent honor and loyalty. I think they look a bit like pigeons...

These frames were taken down by the water front...SE Esplanade, right near the Hawthorne Bridge. The landscape and the River seemed fitting.

During the world wars military deserters were branded or tattooed with a “D,” a means of shaming and marking those whose dereliction of duty was inconsistent with the “army values” of honor and loyalty. Desertion during a time of war continues to be a capital offense and source of ambivalence for soldiers who cannot remain loyal to both the military industrial complex and their own consciences. Marcy Harris (Spc Texas National Guard) was a non-deployable Medic Instructor when she made the decision to desert rather than follow orders her conscience deemed immoral. She was dishonorably discharged in 2005.

Marshall Island Navigation Stick Chart

Your project reminded me of some Navigation charts I saw in the book You Are Here by Katharine Harmon made by people living and boating in the Pacific islands. It's my understanding that these charts show the waves and swells around certain islands (pictured here as shells).

Kinda sad, but the 20th Century Prop house in North Hollywood is going out of business and selling all its inventory. Besides the simple things like chairs, they have tons of sculptures - from Egyptian gods to the Lady Liberty used in Spiderman 3. I am not an LA fan, but I would love to be there right now - I can tell I would bid on a few things just to have some really unique stuff that is part of film history. (this warehouse has been in business for many, many years - just think of the items it can have!)

Content and Form, Positive/Negative Space, Static and Dynamic Forms

Content the subject matter of a work of art or what the piece of art is supposed to be. If the work of art is not a representation of anything and serves no purpose other than being art, then content is simply a description of the piece of art.

Form consists of the physical characteristics of any work of art. For example, the materials used to create it, the shapes or lines seen in the piece or the finishes of the materials used or even the feelings expressed in the art.

Here are two images of a sculpture called Ridon by Ross Lovegrove. The content of this sculpture could be described as a flowing organic form inspired by a motorcycle rider. The form of the sculpture includes that it is made out of carbon fiber, has a polished natural carbon fiber finish and uses rounded shapes and lines without any breaks in the figure.

This is a photo of a concept car designed by BMW called GINA, which stands for Geometry and function in "N" Adaptations. The content of it is obviously a car. The form includes that it is made out of a dynamic articulating aluminum frame covered with a metallic looking flexible and stretchable fabric that allows the car to change shape. The flowing shapes used for body panels and the sharp angular lines where each one of these shapes meet also make up the form of this piece. BMW GINA

The concept of positive and negative space is the idea that shapes can be either made out of a solid material that fills a space or can be the space that is not filled with a material but defined and bordered by material.

Positive and negative space can be easily seen in this aluminum sculpture called The Big Cheese by Bruce Grey. Solid aluminum makes up the positive space and the spherical shapes representing holes in the cheese make up the negative space. You can see how the negative space/shape is defined using an absence of material, in this case aluminum.

The Pegasus wheel designed by Volvo Cars is one of my all time favorite design studies because of its overly simple design that still manages to be aesthetically appealing. In this image of it you can clearly see how the positive space of the wheel itself defines the negative shapes that fill the inside of the wheel.

In sculpture, static form means that the piece does not move or change form, where as dynamic form means that the work can either move or change shape or both. The GINA concept car from BMW seen above is a great example of a design piece with dynamic form.

Le Penseur, translated to English as The Thinker, by Auguste Rodin made out of bronze and marble is a good example of a static sculpture.

Since the essence of a dynamic work of art is movement, I decided that a static photograph simply wouldn't cut it, so here is a link to a video of a "working" sculpture used by Honda as a car commercial:

Pop Art is a movement that originated in Britain and the United States during the 1950's and 60's, partially due to the boom of post-World War II consumerism. As a reaction to more traditional art, pop art poses the notion that mass-produced visuals can be considered 'fine art' as well. Pop art borrows a lot of ideas, themes, and methods from advertising, comics, consumer products, and everyday objects that might otherwise have been considered 'boring.' Pop art takes these objects and materials out of their places in everyday life and isolates them, often times causing viewers to contemplate and/or appreciate them differently (this is an extension of Dadaism). Because of this, pop art is about the attitudes/connotations of a work of art, rather than to the actual art itself.

I found an interesting item while I was looking up my vocabulary words this weekend. Its almost too hard to believe!

Convicted forger A. Schiller was serving his time in SingSing prison in the late 1800s when guards found him dead inhis cell. On his body they found seven regular straight pinswhose heads measured the typical 47/1000ths of an inch or1.17 millimeters in diameter. Under 500 magnification it wasfound that the tiny etchings seen on the heads of the pinswere the words to The Lord's Prayer, which is 65 words and254 letters long. Of the seven pins, six were silver and onewas gold - the gold pin's prayer was flawless and a truemasterpiece. Schiller had spent the last 25 years of his lifecreating the pins, using a tool too small to be seen by thenaked eye. It is estimated that it took 1,863 sepatate carvingstrokes to make it. Schiller went blind because of hisartwork.

A GRID is a network of intersecting horizontal and vertical lines. A MATRIX is a three- dimensional grid, or the point from which something takes form. When used in three-dimensional art, grids and matrices often create a sense of order and unity.

REPETITION:Repeated visual elements such as color, texture, line and shape create strong visual connections that serve as a unifying force within a composition. When these elements are arranged into a deliberate pattern, a sense of RHYTHM is created that guides the eye through the piece, making something inherently stationary appear dynamic.

The Parthenon was constructed in Athens in the 5th century B.C. It is made of marble and limestone and was originally used as a temple for the goddess Athena.

The Hotel Uzbekistan, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, is an example of Soviet architecture.

The Star, by American Sculptor Alexander Calder in 1960, is made of polychrome sheet metal and steel wire.

"What you see is what you get"

A 20th century art movement and style that rejects the idea that art is a form of self expression, social comment, or a reflection on politics, history, or religion. This is accomplished by reducing the use of color, shape, line, and texture in a work of art. Color is used not to set a mood, but rather to delineate space. Often industrials material are used to further distance the artist from the piece. Minimalism emphasizes creating a presence, one in which the work is appreciated simply for what it was.

She was said to have done the most to humanize minimalism. She moved away from the rigid, "male" style toward a more feminine and inward style. She did not want her work to be categorized as "women's art." She felt that the "best way to beat discrimination in art was(sic) art."

Felt women were underrepresented in male dominated art scene. She uses a variety of materials including, wax, gold leaf, and latex. Her other work is often a commentary on the oppression of women in society.

Balance : The distribution of "weight" or activity in a composition

A. SYMMETRICAL BALANCE---exact of even balance along a centerline or

"axis" in these ways:: 1. Radial Symmetry --rotating around a center point

2. Exact Symmetry--a mirror image or an exactly repeated design

3. Axial Symmetry--having 2 opposing repeats, one on each side of an axis.

B. ASYMMETRICAL BALANCE---not exact but counterbalanced with contrasts such as dull and bright colors, dark with light values, geometric with organic shapes, active.

C. APPROXIMATE SYMMETRY---overall organization in which an "even" placement of color, forms, etc is displayed.

Unity and Varity

Unity and variety are complementary concerns. Unity is the appearance or condition of oneness. In design, unity describes the feeling that all the elements in a work belong together and make up a coherent and harmonious whole. When a work of art has unity, we feel that any change would diminish its quality.
Variety, on the other hand, provides diversity. Variety acts to counter unity. The sameness of too much unity is boring, and the diversity of uncontrolled variety is chaotic, but a balance between unity and variety creates life.

*Closure is about the conclusions your mind jumps to when you see a particular image. For example, when you see an octagon, you think stop sign. When you see a man and a woman out having dinner together, you assume they are a couple. Because art, has a limited space in which to tell their stories, we rely heavily on the conclusions we jump to when we see certain image.

Grid and Matrix

Grid and Matrix are two different but closely related modes of organizing the visible world and its aesthetic representations. In analog cultures, the notion of the grid empowers the production of images that claim universal authority. Most often static in nature, grid-like structures, spaces, and images approach the viewer as immediately recognizable and hence devoid of unwanted surprises. A Matrix can be thought of as a three-dimentional grid. (Digitally-based matrices, by way of contrast, set the modernist grid into motion. They have the ability to catalyze visual expressions and experiences that, in spite of their algorithmic foundations, aim at open-ended and often unpredictable transformation.)

Repetition and Rhythm are structural or organisational properties of an art form,pattern or design in terms of compositional elements. The reoccurrence of a design element provides continuity, flow, and dramatic emphasis. This repetition may be exact or varied and it may establish a regular beat. Visual rhythm, like audible rhythm, operates when there is an ordered repetition of elements. The look or feel of movement is achieved by repetition of elements.
